It’s official this years Sunset Junction Street Fair is cancelled! We previously reported that festival organizers successfully raised the $152,000 needed to pay for city services and all that was needed was the vote of approval by the board.
Unfortunately, this meeting was a complete fiasco. Opposers of the festival (including the Silverlake Counsel) were about 10 times more prepared than supporters. Many claiming that the festival has outgrown it’s current format and just doesn’t work for the local community.
The commissioners tore organizers a new one when they “hoped” that the money would be ready by tomorrow in the form of a cashiers check. This being only 3 days away from the actual festival, that was quickly recognized as unacceptable. the saddest part was who actually was present to talk to the board. A lawyer who was hired a month ago and the Sunset Junction booking agent who were painfully not prepared for the questions flying their way. As for McKiney, who knows? Maybe at a Chase ATM?
With this festival being denied, this could mean the end of it for the years to come. The city still wants their money for the previous year and there will be plenty of creditors from this cancelled show wanting to be paid. Only one company has come to the rescue so far and that was Live Nation. They loaned Sunset Junction $100,000 to help pay their fees. If someone as large as Live Nation decides to put on the festival in the future this could be totally possible.
No word about ticket refunds or what will the large list of bands be doing this weekend, but we will keep you informed. Until then, anyone else want to put on a show this weekend? I know some bands available and I’ll DJ!
(along with other acts, vendors, etc.) are out...payday but I don’t think anyone is really...
