Odd Future’s DJ Syd tha Kyd and producer Matt Martians aka The Internet made their live debut last night to a sold out crowd at The Echo. Fans came out by the hundreds and tons were left outside hoping to score a ticket in. But once inside you can tell that this was a show for family and friends. As expected, The entire OFWGKTA were also there to support the usually shy friend Syd. But once she hit the stage with a full band, she completely opened up and showed her full potential.

The Internet ran through a long set list that included almost all of the track off of their debut LP “Purple Naked Ladies”. During their performance of “Lincoln” and “Cocaine”, their fellow OF mates Left Brain and Mike G took the mic to spit out their verses on the track. This entire show felt like a celebration, and you were able to feel it in the performance, in Syd’s interaction with fans and by the crowds reaction to every song. As of now, there are no other US dates on their schedule but we hope to see this band play again soon. Check out all of the photos taken from last nights debut show by clicking the link below.

As part of The Echo’s ten year anniversary month this December, The Soft Pack will headline their own show. This is fitting since I remember seeing The Soft Pack there about 3 years ago when they started off as The Muslims. Now they will take the stage on Friday, December 9th along with Abe Vigoda, Devon Williams and So Many Wizards. Pretty awesome line up if you ask me.

Tickets for this show are available to purchase now through Ticketweb for $10 plus any additional service fees. We will keep you up to date as to what other shows The Echo have up their sleeves to celebrate their first decade.

Bright Side by The Soft Pack

It’s Tuesday and the great shows are still rolling in. Tonight’s selection will range from large theatres, Hollywood hot spots and all the way down to seedy bars in Silverlake. Which ever you end up choosing, tonight is looking mighty good.

  • Beirut will be performing at the Greek Theatre tonight. Bring your ponchos, it’s looking a little gloomy out there.
  • Peter Bjorn and John are taking over The Echo as they continue their string of L.A. shows.
  • The Hood Internet will get you dancing into the wee hours with their mashed up goodness at Dim Mak Studios tonight.
  • Zola Jesus is set to play a free show at Amoeba Music starting at 7pm. This could be a great start to your evening.
  • Funeral Party are one of the many local favorites of ours and they will be at The Roxy Theatre tonight.
  • The Misfits are celebrating a new album and you can catch them over at House of Blues on Sunset.
  • Janes Addiction will bet at the John Anson Ford Theatre for night 2.
  • Bleached are set to tear up Los Globos with their fuzzy rock sound. This one might get a little crazy and comes highly recommended.

With October one of the most jam packed months for shows this year, we decided that it was time to bring back the daily updates so you know exactly whats going on in our city. So lets get things started and let you know whats going on tonight and get your week started off right.

  • Toro Y Moi will be headlining the El Rey Theatre along with Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Tickets are still available for this show and is our pick of the night.
  • Dum Dum Girls are celebrating their new album and will be performing at the Troubadour along with Crocodiles and Colleen Green.
  • Janes Addiction will be taking over the John Anson Ford Amphitheater. This is the first of two sold out shows, but I think you guys can get creative if you really want in.
  • Swahili Blonde will be kicking off their month long Monday residency tonight at The Echo along with Crooked Cowboy & The Freshwater Indians , Raw Geronimo  and DREAMtapes.
  • Hanni El Khatib, The Kopecky Family Band, Elizaveta and special DJ guest Ian Ball from Gomez will all be at Bardot for It’s A School Night.

We put together another list of up and comers in the indie music scene that are definitely worth a listen. Each of the bands listed below also have an upcoming Los Angeles show date for you to check out if you’re really digging it. Stream and be happy.

Kindest Lines hail from New Orleans and come correct with a electro/shoegaze sound. Check out their single “Baltimore” off of their debut LP “Covered In Dust”. Kindest Lines will be performing at The Echo on Sunday, October 2nd for Part Time Punks along with Violet Tremors and Jewels of The Nile.

One of my current favorite bands to come out of L.A. is Fidlar. They have been holding down a lot of opening spots for big name bands and the time is right that Fidlar get the headline slot. Catch them at The Smell on Sunday, October 16th and then at the Troubadour on Friday, October 28th.

If you’re into the local music scene Swahili Blonde may already be a familiar name, but if not then you might want to get to know it. This is a band that brings a long list of instruments to their complex sound. Listening to their latest release “Psycho Tropical Ballet Pink”, you will hear the sitar, saxophone, violin and the forgotten omniphone. Check out “Purple Ink” below and catch Swahili Blonde during their month long Monday night residency at The Echo.
